Meet The Voices Behind Spongebob Characters

The Nickelodeon animated comedy series Spongebob SquarePants is an evergreen entertainment success. It’s extremely popular, not only among young children but equally among adults. As amazing as the show is, the voice-over cast is full of talented voice actors who’ve been ahead of the game. We’ve compiled a list of the voice-over artists behind the Spongebob series.

1.  Tom Kenny as Spongebob SquarePants

Happy Birthday Tom Kenny : r/spongebob

Tom Kenny has that perfect nasal voice as was imagined by the creator of Spongebob’s character. He is an American actor, voice artist, comedian, and voice director. Kenny is also into music and has written different songs for the show. But his voice-over career has made him extremely popular in the industry. It’s because Kenny not only gives his voice to the character but becomes the character through his intonation and articulation. He also portrays other Spongebob series’ characters namely Gary the Snail, the French narrator, and Patchy the Pirate.

2.  Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star

William Mark “Bill” Fagerbakke is an American actor and voice artist. He portrays the main cast member of the series, Patrick Star, who is Spongebob’s best friend. On the 10th anniversary of Spongebob SquarePants, creator Stephen Hillenburg quoted in the documentary that he considered Bill as the smartest ‘dumb’ guy on television. He said that’s what he wanted for Patrick Star. It’s a character that requires a low, throaty sound to deliver Patrick’s silliness with a comedic effect.

3.  Rodger Bumpass as Squidward Tentacles

Squidward Tentacles is one of the main cast members for the Spongebob Squarepants franchise. Rodger Bumpass is a prolific artist since he is voicing a character that depicts Squidward’s weariness and dullness so well. Rodger is a 70-year-old and yet his highly nasal tone perfectly illustrates Squidward’s huge snout. He also used to perform in a late-night comedy show that he produced himself.

4.  Clancy Brown as Eugene H.Krabs

Meet the actor behind Mr. Krabs of 'SpongeBob Squarepants'

Clancy Brown is an American voice actor whose personality and sound tonality are the complete opposite of what he is playing for the Spongebob SquarePants franchise. Yet he portrays Mr. Krabs’ squeakiness perfectly. You’ll find his voice in deep-toned villains in Highlander and the bad preacher in Carnivale. The audience might have observed that Mr. Krabs does have a touch of wickedness when it comes to money.

5.  Doug Lawrence as Sheldon J. Plankton

East Brunswick native voices SpongeBob Squarepants character

Mr. Doug is actually a writer but he prefers to do roles and voice characters in cartoons that he’s written. In an interview, Doug informed the audience that he voices Larry the Lobster as well. He said that to sound like Larry he speaks with his chest puffed out. Doug has written for Rock’s Modern Life and had given voice to the character of Filburt Turtle.

Summary

This entire lineup for Spongebob SquarePants is expertly portraying their characters from 1999 to the present. Others, especially female artists, include Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks, Mary Jo Catlett as Mrs. Puff, Lori Alan as Mrs. Pearl Krab, and Jill Taley as Karen.
